Sensrad.

A growth case.

Background.

A new generation of radar chipsets met a clearly identified need. Sensrad is where the opportunity and our expertise converged.
In 2020, Qamcom was already an established player in radar, advanced signal processing, high-frequency electronics, embedded systems and systems engineering. Radars for the automotive industry had been shipped since the 1990s, but were limited to providing range, velocity, and angle of targets. More advanced techniques were well-understood in defence and academic contexts but impractical for automotive cost and size targets.

When a new generation of radar chipsets made high-performance 4D imaging radar possible on a scalable platform, it met a clearly identified need: mobility and infrastructure systems required a sensor that works in rain, fog, snow, dust, smoke, darkness and backlight, where traditional sensors reach their limits.

Sensrad is where that need and that opportunity meet.

The Sensrad Journey.

R&D.

“We engineered a complete perception platform, from chipset integration to system-level architecture.”

From chipset partnership to a dedicated 4D imaging radar platform, engineered for perception in all conditions.
In 2020, Qamcom formed a partnership with Arbe, a global leader in ultra-high-resolution radar chipsets whose technology delivers up to 100 times more detail than conventional radar systems. Building on Arbe’s chipset as the hardware foundation, Qamcom’s went to work on what would internally become Project Hugin: a dedicated 4D imaging radar platform for perception in all conditions.

The development cut across several core competences: radar; signal processing; RF and embedded systems. We explored the technology through demonstrators, proving that we had engineered a platform with unparalleled resolution capable of detecting and classifying even small objects while maintaining reliable performance under interference and harsh conditions. This was advanced development following our model: explore, prove and engineer, the first steps towards refinement, scaling and real-world impact.

Perception. In all conditions.

Incubation.

A new generation of radar chipsets met a clearly identified need. Sensrad is where the opportunity and our expertise converged.
From 2020 to 2023, Project Hugin matured within Qamcom as an internal initiative, moving from early exploration through engineering, validation and product development. Once the technology platform was strong enough and the market opportunity clear, we took the project from concept to company.

Thus, Sensrad saw the world in 2023. We established strategy and business development, accounting and operational structure, and developed a clear product strategy with Hugin D1 as the flagship product.
The launch also included the full startup kit we use when building technology, platforms and companies for real impact: brand positioning and narrative, visual identity, website, presentations and communication materials, as well as IP and IPR management, naming, trademark protection and go-to-market.

Investment.

Three years as an internal initiative, then from concept to company with a full market startup kit.
Qamcom acts as an active industrial owner, not a traditional investment company. We combine capital with IP, platforms, engineering services and structural capital. This is an in-kind venture model where we commit engineering teams, technology platforms and business support in exchange for ownership and a long-term role.

Outcome.

Three outcomes: a deepened technology partnership, a spin-off company, and a joint venture.

Sensrad is the result of all three parts of the framework operating simultaneously, and it produced three distinct outcomes.

Advanced partnership with Arbe.

Arbe Starting in 2020, the partnership with Arbe provided the chipset foundation that made the entire venture possible. Arbe’s ultra-high-resolution radar chipset, with its 48×48 transmit and receive channel array and dedicated processor chip, enabled Qamcom to engineer a radar platform of a calibre that would have taken years longer to develop from scratch.

The partnership has since deepened: Arbe and Sensrad have signed a support and maintenance agreement to reinforce Sensrad’s 4D imaging radar program, covering design review, system debugging, calibration, software and hardware updates and system optimisation.

Spin-off.

In 2023, Project Hugin became Sensrad, spun off from Qamcom as a dedicated 4D radar company based in Gothenburg. The founding team of approximately 25 people was drawn primarily from those who had worked on Project Hugin at Qamcom, joined by colleagues from 2550 Engineering and Gapwaves.

This was not a blank-sheet startup; it was a team with deep shared history, an engineered product and a clear market position from day one. Today, Sensrad is composed of a 15 people strong team.

Joint venture with Gapwaves.

To create an exceptionally strong joint technology position, Qamcom partnered with Gapwaves, a technology powerhouse in antenna and radar, forming a joint venture around Sensrad. Gapwaves contributed its antenna and radar technology, complementing Qamcom’s platform and engineering depth, and establishing Sensrad as a company with a uniquely powerful technology foundation serving mobility, surveillance and infrastructure
