Atmospheric research through a huge radar system.

EISCAT operates one of the world's most ambitious radar facilities, spanning Sweden, Norway, and Finland to observe the upper atmosphere. Measuring space weather, meteors, and orbital debris with the accuracy researchers need required a fully digital steering system for tens of thousands of antennas — and exceptional radar expertise to deliver it.

Challenge

EISCAT is a scientific foundation where the international community is running a large radar facility in northern Sweden, Norway, and Finland that measures the upper atmosphere – to observe and understand the space weather, but also phenomena like meteors and space debris. To do that they needed the right technology, equipment, and a partner with the right competence and experience.

EISCAT3D is a fully software-controlled phased array radar having tens of thousands of antennas in three different countries.

The phase and amplitude of each transmitter channel, feeding an antenna dipole, needed to be controlled with high accuracy and stability. Qamcom provided a solution with the best value and technical readiness.

Solution

  • Qamcom has developed and manufactured over 400 pieces of 16 channel waveform generators to be a steer and control device for the transmitters.
  • Qamcom's fully digital steering system provides flexible and stable control of the transmitted RF signal.
  • Qamcom provides also advanced radar technology expertise.

Outcome

Qamcom's solution has simplified, sped up, and made the studies more accurate. Improving data quality and contributing to the scientific outcome, as understanding the atmosphere better and giving great input to climate research.
